Community Engagement

CULTURAL LEARNING: In Alaska, I developed, taught, and shared cross-curricular lessons supporting and embracing Iñupiaq values, culture, history, language, and worldview as a foundation for instructional support in all content areas.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & INSIGHT: I participated alongside community members in community events including holiday events and subsistence hunting.

COMMUNITY INSIGHT: I regularly invited elders and families to share experiences and insights. Because of my interest and involvement, I was invited to participate with students from across the state in indigenous culture events including the Alaska Federation of Natives Youth & Elders conference.

WHO'S OUT THERE: I also sought opportunities to speak with authors like Bill Nye and David Blatner through social media. They answered questions and hosted activities like a live video “Pi Day” contest with other classrooms around the country. We even received some free books!

SOCIAL NETWORKING: Those eager to share experiences with their families were able to do so through social networking pages. It quickly became active, and through this, we enjoyed positive discussions more frequently than conferencing otherwise allowed.
